Take a [Marketing] Page from Jesse & The Rippers

August 7, 2013

I know I’m not the only one. Watching the Jesse & the Rippers reunion on Jimmy Fallon was not only ah-mazing, but this appearance was something I’ve anticipated for a long time. 🙂 Come on! Who didn’t adore Uncle Jesse with that grunged-out look, complete with ripped jeans and leather vest? So awesome. Definitely have to play proper homage to this rockin’ faux band of the late-80’s/early-90’s.

And the bonus? Those dudes hit the marketing and public relations jack-pot so be sure to take note from these fellas –

1. Build Relationships that Matter

First, Jesse’s brother-in-law, Danny, was the co-host of one of the most popular morning shows in San Fransisco. He has an immediate, close connection to media. However, just because you know [or are related to] someone within the media space doesn’t mean the stars magically align and you will get that on-air spot. Winning over family and friends might be the easy part, but building that business-esque relationship with Danny, or even just getting an introduction with his boss, may take more work than expected. Take the time to meet local media, build those relationships, and really care about which media outlets work best for your product/business/feature/etc.

2. Always Plan on Something Happening

Everything didn’t always go as planned with this group. Remember when Jesse & the Rippers were double-booked by accident and Jesse showed up at the Smash Club by himself? Oh, you don’t? Well, he was the only one there – no Rippers to be seen. Panic moment for sure. But did he sweat it? Of course he did – but then he pulled it together and carried out Plan B with his family. Although not the ideal scenario, Jesse still fulfilled this commitment to make sure his he delivered. Contingency plans are a must because when the unexpected occurs, you want to be sure you can deliver.

3. Change and Growth are Expected

Jesse’s band hit the big time, toured Japan, and gained international success. However, with all this opportunity comes a price. He understood that music is a part of him- but his family comes first. Realizing all that he achieved, and what he still had to accomplish, he decided to alter his course of action. Still dedicated to the music industry, he elevated his role from working at a club to owning it. His experience, talent, and support system provided him with what he needed to take ownership of the Smash Club. And he did it. It wasn’t easy. The road was a long one, and there were bumps along the way. But changes in course are imminent and, in many cases, for the best.

[Bonus Tip] Sometimes it’s not about reinventing the wheel but reinterpreting and repurposing existing content. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. If the fans loved it at one time, bring it back with a vengeance.

So, without further ado….Jesse & the Rippers!!
