The Day I Was Called Mom

May 1, 2014

Mads is a chatterbox. CHATTERBOX. She talks non-stop, something that I lovelovelove and will always treasure. My hopes for her teen years include maintaining her chatterbox tendencies with her rockstar, oh-so-cool parents. I can dream. But that’s light-years away, right parental veterans???

Okay – don’t want to think about it!

So, it was a regular morning driving to daycare. She and I have very philosophical and thought-provoking conversations on the way to school. From what Winnie the Pooh will be eating for lunch to discussing the plot of the newest cardboard book she received in the mail, our conversations are necessary and important. This day was like any other day…

And then it happened.

After a few moments of rare silence, she says, “Hi, mom!”

Hi, mom.

Mom.

Not a new word. One I love, but up until this point, I was mama. I was mommy. I was mOOOOmY.

I remember the day when this precious gift uttered “mama” for the first time. Water-works paired with high-fives. A celebration. She could FINALLY call out to me. Let me know when she needed me, when she wanted me. She was able to address me by that magical name I longed to hear since I first heard that heartbeat. And now, we moved into a different space. An older space.

What is this “mom” stuff you speak of, Mads? I mean, I call my mom, “mom”.

So, my instant gut reaction? Instead of saying “hi” back to her…

“You know, you can call me ‘mommy’.”

I’m ridiculous, I’m aware, but too soon, little Mads. Too soon! I’m in a constant state of denial with this little girl. I think she will be this stage forever. But we all know that’s not possible. And this moment was a single snapshot in time. My toddler has since returned to calling me “mommy” … for now. But it was just another reminder that time goes very fast.

In fact, time speeds up when you aren’t paying attention. Enjoy it, friends. Breath it all in.

Have a wonderful evening! xo.

AW, it DOES go fast! (Well, fast and slow at the same time, obviously. 🙂 My boys have been calling me mom for a good while now, and I still feel little pangs when I hear other kids call their moms “mommy.” Soon, though, our little Quinn will be talking, so hopefully I still have a couple more years of Mommy in me!

Isn’t it weird that just the smallest change in a word has such an effect on us (as moms)? I’m sure it means the same thing to them, but definitely something is lost on us 🙂 Mads seems to be using the two words interchangeably now, so I guess that’s okay 😉

Also, my husband just realized she started calling him dad… 🙂
