Baking Tips for Yummy Cinnamon Rolls

November 18, 2014

I love baking! Thank goodness the temps are low. Now my simple act of turning the oven on does not cause my hubs to break into a sweat. 🙂

I had the itch to make cinnamon rolls and of course I went straight to Pinterest for inspiration and ultimately a really great recipe. Ideally, I was looking for something that was quick and delicious. Unfortunately, when it comes to baking, the “quick and delicious” combination doesn’t always work together. But no worries. And in this case, I would recommend giving yourself the time. It’s worth it. And your family will definitely wait for them.Cinnamon rolls - Quick Tips!
I found the recipe at Picky Palate and followed it pretty much to a T. {HUGE KUDOS TO THIS MAMA’S RECIPE! Recommending this now!}

This isn’t my first cinnamon roll rodeo. I’ve seen the doughy, the dry and the flat. I’ve learned a thing or two along the way, and I must say that this is one of the first recipes that I felt really hit the nail on the head in terms of just general awesomeness. So, this isn’t really a review of the recipe {like I said, it’s awesome so click on the link!}, but helpful tips for making really delicious cinnamon rolls.
Cinnamon Roll DoughTip One: T a k e  y o u r  t i m e. I know, I know. You WANT THEM NOW. Kids are up. Coffee is brewed. You’re READY. I tell you this here and now: just let the dough rest. Let it rise and rise some more. This recipe will take about 2.5-3 hours. Plan accordingly. If time just isn’t on your side in the morning, make these babies the night before, skip applying the frosting and reheat them in the oven the next morning. I promise you that the cinnamon rolls are really good the next day.
Cinnamon and Sugar on the doughTip Two: Melt the butter. When you have the dough rolled out and ready to go, it’s suggested to use softened butter and just slather it all over with your hands. Quick tip? Melt the butter and just drizzle it all over.

Tip Three: No such thing as too much cinnamon + sugar. That’s all. Adding in pecans or raisins is a bonus.
Rolling the Cinnamon Roll Dough!!Tip Four: The secret to cutting cinnamon rolls? DENTAL FLOSS.

This is no joke, friends. Dental floss is your biggest helper when it comes to cutting clean and even cinnamon rolls. I have a tendency to “saw” these poor guys, which causes the rolls to be more oval and flat. The dental floss helps the rolls keep their shape and it actually takes half the time to cut.

Only have lovely minty dental floss? No worries. That was all I had and the scent/flavor was not transferred to the cinnamon rolls at all. You’re good.
Cinnamon Rolls restingTip Five: Final resting time can vary. Once they are cut into those beautiful little swirls and placed in your preferred baking vessel, let them rest again. I guess they didn’t get enough rest the first time around 🙂 But seriously, letting them rest again in a warm place will allow them to double in size before hitting the oven, and it will create a really fluffy roll.

The recipe did say to let them rest for about 45 minutes to 1 hour. I didn’t go this long. Thirty minutes seemed to work out great.

Cinnamon Rolls baking in the ovenTip Six: Bake in several dishes and share! Not required, but I mean, it’s the holiday season so share that cinnamony-sugary love!

Enjoy!!
